Dharan as an Eastern Nepal Base
Dharan is a convenient base for the eastern hills and plains: Chatara and the Koshi river are a short drive south, while the tea country around Ilam lies to the north-east. This five-day plan keeps the driving reasonable and leaves room to slow down.
Day 1 — Arrive and Settle In
Check in at Hotel Gorkha, then take an easy evening walk to the Dharan Clock Tower and the surrounding bazaar before dinner.
Day 2 — Bijayapur and Dantakali
Start early for the climb to Bijayapur Gadhi and Budha Subba Temple, then visit Dantakali Temple on the same hillside. Keep the afternoon free.
Day 3 — Chatara and the Koshi
Drive south to Chatara on the Saptakoshi (roughly 15–20 km, under an hour), where the ghats and the Barahakshetra temple make a peaceful half- to full-day outing.
Day 4 — Ilam Tea Country
An early start for the long scenic drive to Ilam (around 3.5–4 hours by private vehicle; longer by public bus). Visit the Kanyam tea estate, take a pony ride through the gardens, and taste fresh orthodox tea before returning to Dharan.
Day 5 — Departure
A last breakfast at Hotel Gorkha, then onward travel to Biratnagar airport or towards Kathmandu.
